What to Know First
Separate EU legal conformity from the international IECEx certification system and verify the complete Ex marking.
- ATEX is an EU legal conformity framework.
- IECEx is an international certification system based on IEC standards.
- Neither scheme replaces the hazardous-area classification or installation review.
ATEX in plain English
Directive 2014/34/EU sets essential health and safety requirements for equipment placed on the EU market for potentially explosive atmospheres. The assessment needed depends on the equipment group and category, and forms part of CE marking.
The ATEX workplace directive separately addresses employer responsibilities in hazardous workplaces.
IECEx in plain English
IECEx uses approved certification bodies and test laboratories to issue online certificates against IEC standards. It is designed as an international system, but each country decides how it is accepted in law.
An IECEx certificate shows testing and certification to the relevant IEC standards. It does not, by itself, meet EU ATEX requirements.
- Check the controlled online certificate
- Match the complete Ex marking
- Read X and U conditions
- Verify quality-assurance or production status where relevant
The installation can still invalidate the choice
Glands, barriers, cables, earthing and enclosure work must preserve the certified protection. Intrinsically safe loops require compatible entity parameters; flameproof equipment requires correct cable entries and undamaged flame paths.
Use competent hazardous-area designers and installers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can IECEx replace ATEX in the European Union?
No. An IECEx certificate may help with the assessment, but your equipment still needs to meet the applicable EU ATEX requirements.
