Quick answer

What to Know First

Compare access poles, installed test systems and safe maintenance planning.

  • Functional testing applies a suitable stimulus and confirms the system response.
  • Poles, platforms and installed test systems solve different access problems.
  • The method must be safe, repeatable and properly recorded.

A button test is not always a detector test

A functional detector test should challenge the sensing path in the manner required by the code and manufacturer. For smoke detectors this normally means introducing an accepted aerosol or smoke into the sensing chamber; flame and heat detectors need appropriate methods.

The result must include the panel indication and any required output.

Choose an access method from the building

Telescopic test poles are efficient where the detector can be reached from a stable floor position. Mobile elevating work platforms suit large open areas but need access and trained operators. Installed testing systems can reduce repeated high-level access in atria, shafts and critical spaces.

Do not stand on improvised furniture or reach from an unsecured ladder.

  • Survey ceiling height and obstacles
  • Select a detector-specific test cup or tool
  • Control sounders and interfaces
  • Clean contaminated detectors
  • Record failures and retest after repair

Test the difficult devices first

Access problems often cause the same detectors to be skipped repeatedly. Flag inaccessible devices in the asset register and plan shutdowns, permits and equipment in advance.

A complete record should show every device, not only the total number tested.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can canned aerosol be sprayed directly at a smoke detector?

Use only a listed or manufacturer-accepted method and test cup. Direct overspray can contaminate the detector and gives an uncontrolled test.
