What to Know First
How international rules, class requirements and product approvals interact.
- IMO sets international obligations; flag administrations and recognised organisations implement them.
- Class type approval does not replace vessel-level design review.
- Establish vessel, flag, class and contract requirements before selecting equipment.
Who does what
IMO develops international instruments such as SOLAS. A vessel’s flag administration makes statutory decisions and may authorise a recognised organisation to act on its behalf. Class societies apply their own rules to the vessel’s design, construction and survey.
IACS develops unified requirements used by its member societies, but the current rule of the vessel’s chosen class is the working document.
Fire requirements are system-specific
SOLAS chapter II-2 sets fire safety objectives and requirements. The FSS Code gives technical requirements for systems such as fixed gas, foam, water mist, sprinkler, detection and sample-extraction smoke detection.
The required arrangement depends on vessel type and protected space.
- Check the current statutory instrument
- Confirm flag interpretations
- Use type-approved products where required
- Submit system drawings and calculations for vessel review
Type approval is not the final approval
A type certificate confirms stated models against stated rules and environmental categories. It does not approve cable routing, detector spacing, hydraulic calculations or the complete cause-and-effect on a particular vessel.
Keep the certificate, approved drawings, commissioning records and survey records together.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does DNV approval mean any class society will accept the product?
No. Another class society may accept the certificate, but you still need to meet its rules and the requirements for your vessel and flag state.
